McCloskey | Charles | | | | | | [Reported to have been buried in this cemetery. No stone and location unknown] |
| July 4, 1881 was going to be a day of grand
celebration. Towns people and farmers met at the
grove south of the post office where Giles and Son
established a brick kiln to have a barbecue. The
Honorable Binger Hermann was the orator of the
day and the day was progressing happily. Judge
Hermann was in the height of his eloquence when a
pistol shot was heard back of the speakers’ stand.
Charles McCloskey fell at the front of a myrtle
tree and died within minutes having been shot
through the heart . McCloskey had been shot by
David Higgins who ran through the crowd, jumped
down the river bank, swam the stream and
disappeared. Higgins was never captured. Of course
the pleasures of the day were at an end. |
