| The Upper Fishtrap
Cemetery is located on the Myrtle Point/Lampa Mountain Road,
which is northwest of Arago, Coos County, Oregon. It is a public
cemetery for residents of Arago, and is owned and maintained by
the Myrtle Point School District and is on the Oregon Historic Cemetery list. Graves date from 1888 to present. Maintenance of this cemetery
is performed by the Myrtle Point High School students and other volunteers."

Obituary: Funeral services will be held at the Schroeder Bros. Chapel here tomorrow (Saturday) at
2 p.m. for Lafe Cornwell, who died Wednesday at Salem, where he was taken last week because of ill health. Interment will be in the Fishtrap cemetery.
Mr. Cornwell was born in Kentucky, Dec. 5, 1859, and was 66 years and eight months in age. He was married, March 7, 1890, to Jane Culbertson, who survives him.
Of the eleven children born to them, nine are still living, Mrs. Frank Miller, Mrs. A.J. Patrick, Gano, Wiley, Thos. [Thomas], Ray and Cerilda Cornwell, all
of Arago, Mrs. Leonard Allen and Ray Cornwell, both of Coquille. There are also 18 grandchildren, eight great grand children surviving, besides five brothers and
a sister. Mr. Cornwell had been a resident of Oregon for 34 years and had conducted a ranch at Fishtrap since coming to Coos county in 1905.

Newspaper Clipping: A choir of Arago neighbors sang at the funeral of Lafe Cornwell Saturday. Mr. Cornwell drove
the Fishtrap school route from the time the district was consolidated until ill health three years ago forced him to give the job to his sons. He
has been a familiar figure about Arago for such a long time that all in the community knew him and will miss him.

Biography: Melvin Hayter is a native of Oregon, the son of a pioneer in its settlement, and has been a resident of Coos County for almost 50 years. During this time he has gained the respect and esteem of his friends and acquaintances by reason of a consistently honest, upright and straightforward life.
He was born in Polk County, near The Dalles [sic; Dallas], on March 15, 1863, and is a son of W.L. and Sarah (Crowley) Hayter, natives of Platt City, Missouri. They were married in that section and crossed the plains in pioneer times, locating in Polk County where they took up a donation land claim upon which they lived until 1865. In that year they disposed of their property and came to Coos County where the father took up land near Fishtrap on the Coquille River, which he improved and operated for a number of years, disposing of his holdings eventually in order to purchase 160 acres in the same section. After a time he sold this ranch, also soil in that section, and moved to Bandon where he lived and retired until his death which occurred in 1909.
He and his wife became the parents of 15 children: Theodosia and Richard M., who reside in California; Sarah, who has passed away; Melvin, the subject of this review; James, also a resident of California; William, whose residence is unknown; Priscilla, the wife of R.S. Knowlton of Coquille; Robert, who makes his home in Marshfield; Ella, the widow of Robert Long of Polk County; Cora, who married John Lindebeck of Calif.; Edith, who became the wife of Grant Beal, also of California; May, the wife of Alva Lee, a resident of Myrtle Point; Andrew J., who makes his home in the same city; Wilbur O. of California; and Charles, who is deceased.
Melvin Hayter grew up upon his father's farm and at an early age became acquainted with the best agricultural methods and gained a personal experience in the details of farm operation. He had the distinction of attending the first school in Coos County and pursued the usual course of studies until he was 14 years of age. He then went to work in the logging camps and followed lumbering for 28 years, abandoning the occupation at the end of that time in favor of general farming. He pre-empted a homestead claim of 160 acres that he cultivated and improved for a number of years, bringing it to a high state of development. He recently sold this property and bought a home in Riverton where he resided only a short time afterward, leasing his father's property upon which he resided for a year and a half. He then retired from independent agricultural life, purchased other property in Riverton, and now works upon neighboring farms.
In 1895 Mr. Hayter was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Pearl Steward, a sister of George A. Steward, of whom further mention is made elsewhere in this work. To their union was born two children: Lusta H., who was born in 1901, and who is a pupil in the public schools of her native city [sic: Lester James, a son]; and Alvin, whose birth occurred in 1904, and who is also attending school.
Mr. Hayter is liberal in his political views, preferring not to affiliate with any party. He takes an intelligent interest in public affairs but has never sought office. He belongs to the Woodmen of the World, his only fraternal affiliation. During the 48 years of his residence in Oregon he has won true success in gaining the respect and esteem of his fellow citizens.

Obituary: Sarah C. Hayter
Mrs. Sarah Catherine Hayter died at Coquille City, Sept. 26, 1883,
at 1 p.m. Sister Hayter was born in Holt county, Missouri, Oct 20, 1840;
Moved to Oregon with her parents; Mr. and Mrs. Crowley, settled in Polk
County in the year of 1846; professed religion and was baptised by Eld.
C. C Riley into the fellowship of La Creole Baptist church in 1854;
united in marriage with W. L. Hayter in June, 1856; moved to Coos county in
1865. She, with her husband, united with Pleasant Hill Baptist church, of
which she proved to be a faithful member until her death. Sister Hayter was
an earnest Christian; always had a word of encouragement for her pastor, and
ready to help in every good work. She suffered much during her last illness.
Her husband moved her to Coquille City, that he might place her under the care
of the best medical advice he could secure. Everything that love could devise
was done but in vain. She passed away quietly as a child going to sleep. She
has gone to her home-to the home of which she loved to talk so much. She said
to the writer, a short time before her death: "There is no friend like Jesus."
Her sky was clear: she felt that all was well. She was the mother of fifteen
children, 8 boys and 7 girls, all living except a little girl who preceded her
to the better world. Her children except the oldest daughter who was on a visit
to the valley attended her funeral. She leaves a devoted husband, who will sadly
miss her, also an aged mother, two brothers and a sister, besides a large circle
of friends and relatives. The funeral was largely attended, Eld. C. F. Bailey,
assisted by Eld. G. Black, preaching the funeral sermon from Luke 13:29. The
bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.

Obituary: Miss Theodosia Hayter
was born in Dallas, Polk Co., Oregon Mar. 29, 1857, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Washington L. Hayter, early settlers of Oregon,
came from Missouri to Polk County in Sept. 1854. In 1865 the
family came to Coos county, settling first at Fishtrap and later
at Arago. Leaves 6 brothers: Richard R., James and Wilbur of
Calif.; Melvin of Riverton, Oregon; Robert of Coos River; A.J.
of Myrtle Point; and 5 sisters; Mrs. Annie Knowlton, Mrs. Edith

Obituary: The funeral of Washington L Hayter
was held at the Upper Fishtrap Cemetery last Friday at 2 p.m.,
He having passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 1909, at the age of
84 years, 4 months and 9 days. He had been in feeble health for
some time, but was not supposed to be in a critical condition
until a week or so before his death when he suffered a stroke of
paralysis which terminated in death. The deceased was born in
Howard County, Missouri in 1825. He came to Oregon in 1854,
first locating in Polk County. He Came to Coos in 1865 first
settling on Fishtrap, afterward living at different places in
the county, his wife having passed on before some 24 years ago
in Coquille. To this couple were born fifteen children, fourteen
of whom are living as follows: Theodocia; R. M.; Melvin; Jas.
T.; W. B.; Mrs. R. S. Knowlton: Mrs. Ella Long; Mrs. Lindebeck;
Robert; E.L.; Mrs. D. G. Beale; Mrs. Alva Lee; Wilbur, Chas. and
Andrew. The Funeral was conducted by Rev. Chas. Barlow, and was
attended by a large number of his old neighbors and many
friends. Mr. and Mrs. Hayter crossed the plains by team and
underwent all the trials and dangers of a trip of that kind, and
have done their part toward the settling of the Coquille valley.
Mr. Hayter was for many years a consistent Christian and an
ardent member of the Baptist church. Mr. Hayter was born in
Howard County, Missouri march 12, 1825. He joined the rush of
goldseekers to California in 1849, and returned to Missouri a
year later by the Panama route. In 1854 he again crossed the
plains and located in Polk County, Oregon, where he resided
until 1863. He then moved to Coos County and lived there
continuously until his death. He was a veteran of the Yakima
Indian War, having served in the Companies of Captains Burch and
Armstrong in 1855-56. His wife, who was a daughter of Thomas and
Katherine Crowley, of Polk County, died 26 years ago. He is
survived by a large family of sons and daughters nearly all of
whom are residents of Coos County.

Obituary: At her request, no services will be held for Donna McCormick, 68, of Coos Bay. She will
be buried at the Fish Trap Cemetery, where her pioneer great-grandparents, Francis and Cerilda Miller and family are. Donna
was born March 20, 1939, in Burbank, Calif., the daughter of Herman and Evelyn (Stafford) Smith. She died June 28, 2007, in
Coos Bay, after a three year battle with ALS - Lou Gehrig disease. She was very brave and didn't complain once. She was a
real trooper. Donna had a great personality and loved to collect antiques and refinish them. She enjoyed talking with people
and having a good time with her family. She was very loved and will be missed. She is survived by her daughter, Cindy [xxxx] and
husband, Scott, of San Jose, Calif.; son, Dan [xxxx] and wife, Patty, of Coos Bay; sisters, Ramona Hull of Coos Bay and Betty
[xxxx] and husband, Newell, of Willows, Calif.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She
is preceded in death by her son, Robert; parents, and stepmother, Ida Smith. The family suggests memorial contributions to the
South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, OR 97420; or the Providence ALS Center, 5050 NE Hoyt St., No. 315 Portland,
Portland, OR 97213.

Obituary: Francis M. Miller was born in
Cedar Co. Missouri May 8, 1844 and passed away Mar. 25, 1922 at
the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Clinton at Coquille. He
was the son of Madison and Mary Miller, natives of Tennessee.
Mr. Miller came to Jackson county, Oregon in 1872 and remained
at home until he was 33 years when he moved to Coos county and
purchased a small farm in 1870. He married Miss Cerilda Miller,
the daughter of William and Mary Miller, natives of Missouri,
who crossed the plains and settled in Douglas county in 1852. To
them was born 8 children , all of whom are living: Mrs. Minnie
Clinton, Mrs. Maud Paull, W. Frank Miller, Mrs. Sadie Smith,
Mrs. Ettie Ethredge, Robert L. Miller, Jesse Miller and Mrs.
Grace Lane. Mr. Miller served as a Corporal in Co.G. of the 45th
Regiment of Infantry, Missouri Volunteers from Nov 13, 1864 to
Aug. 5th, 1865. Mrs. Miller died 3 years ago. Buried in Upper
Fishtrap cemetery.

A memorial service for Lena Belle Newton, 78, of Coos Bay, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Bunkerhill Assembly of God Church, 1135 Harriet, Coos Bay. The Rev. Howard Thompson will officiate. Cremation rites were held. Inurnment will be at the Fishtrap Cemetery in Myrtle Point.
Lena was born March 27, 1927, in Los Angeles, the daughter of Frank and Eva (Smith) Herker. She died April 12, 2005, in Coos Bay.
Lena worked for Roseburg Lumber Company for more than 20 years and off and on for St. Catherine's as a CNA. She loved sewing, embroidery and crocheting.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda and Warren Lyons of Coos Bay and Rosanna and Jim Hanks of Poulsbo, Wash.; sons, Robert Newton Jr. of Kissmet, Fla., and David Newton of Coos Bay; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Albert Herker of Woodburn and Ralph Herker of Payette, Idaho.
Cremation rites and arrangements are under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary, 267-4216.

Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Patrick. Funeral services were held at the First Assembly of God Church in Coquille on March 28 for Mary Elizabeth Patrick of Myrtle Point who died March 25 in Myrtle Point. She was 93. Rev. Gary Morse officiated.
Mrs. Patrick was born Oct. 28, 1894 in Tabor, Ken. She was a resident of the Coquille area her entire lifetime. She and Andrew Patrick were married June 6, 1911. He preceded her in death in 1949.
She was preced in death also by children Ora Pardo, Parm Patrick, Cecil Patrick and Don Patrick; brothers and sisters Ray Cornwell, Ida Miller, Laura Allen, Cerilda Cornwell and Pearl Blatchly.
Internment was at Fish Trap cemetery. Services were under the direction of Amling/Schroeder Funeral Services. The family has suggested that friends may make contributions to the Myrtle Point Care Center Memorial Fund.

Biography: ROWAN, Samuel M., was born Sept. 11, 1847, in Blunt [sic; Blount] Co., Tenn. He came to Coos county in March, 1884, settled on Fishtrap and has lived there ever since. By occupation he is a farmer and hunter. He married Mary Jane Stillwell, who was born in Berkley Co., Va., Aug. 1, 1848. Obituary: Ru, Andar "Ty"
Dec. 31, 1943 - June 24, 2008
At his request, no services will be held for "Ty" Andar Ru, 64, of North Bend.
Ty was born Dec. 31, 1943, in Samford, Conn., the son of Charles and Etta May Hilton. He died June 24, 2008, at home in North Bend.
He was raised and educated in California. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He spent several years as a college instructor.
He lived in many places as a world citizen and has always been a protector and caregiver of Mother Earth.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Hicks; sons, Niam Ru and Nadim Ru; daughters, Nadra Yazdani, Genevieve Singleton and Sarah Hicks; eight grandchildren; and brother, Peter Hilton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Amling/Schroeder Funeral Service, Coquille, 396-3846.

the Upper Fish trap cemetery, but this appears to be incorrect.
Her obituary on p.15 of Pioneers and Incidents of the Upper
Coquille Valley by Alice Woodridge, indicates she was "laid
to rest in the cemetery near the J.J. Lamb place". On p.92
of this same book, the obituary for J.J. Lamb indicates "he
settled on Rink Creek near Coquille" before moving into
Coquille City.
