Bonnie Jean Higgins
A private graveside service will be held for
Bonnie Jean (Edwards) Higgins, 83, of Myrtle
Point, on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Catching Creek
Cemetery.
Bonnie was born March 21, 1924, in Bandon, the
youngest of four children and the only daughter of
George Lewis and Bertha May Edwards, all of
whom preceded her in death. She died Feb. 3,
2008, in Coos Bay.
Bonnie's ancestors had lived in the United States
since at least the mid-1700s. She attended grade
school in a one-room school house up in the hills
in Langlois. She attended Riverton High School for
two years and then finished at Marshfield High
School, graduating in 1942.
Bonnie married her sweetheart, Lester Delizon
Higgins, on March 21, 1943. Together they lived
through the Great Depression, World War II, the
Korean War, Kennedy's assassination, the Vietnam
War, the first man on the moon, the development of
the personal computer and Internet and two
children.
During the early years of their marriage, Bonnie
was the cook in a logging camp up the Coos River,
where Lester worked.
Bonnie worked hard all her life, both at home and
in a wide variety of jobs. Some of her jobs
included mill work in Port Orford, working in the
Millard School in the Langlois hills, Dick's Feed
Store and she even worked for many years at the
Langlois Market, where they now have a sandwich
named in her honor. The thought of this sandwich
always brought a smile to her face.
Bonnie and Lester lived in Langlois for 30 years
before moving back to Myrtle Point. Bonnie was
always very active in her church wherever the
family lived and was a member of the Langlois
Community Church and the Myrtle Point Baptist
Church. She had a great faith in God and trusted
him always.
Bonnie was a loving wife, dedicated mother,
generous grandmother and wonderful
great-grandmother. She loved her family, her
friends and God. There just wasn't anyone on the
earth she did not love. To know Bonnie was to love
and respect her.
Bonnie is survived by her husband of nearly 65
years, Lester of Myrtle Point; daughter, Connie
McMurrain, granddaughters, Kerrie and Catie

| Lester Higgins, 94, of Myrtle Point was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Myrtle Point, the fifth of six children to Delizon Smith Higgins and Leona Grace Fite. He died Feb. 6, 2011, in Myrtle Point at his home.
As a young boy, Lester, like most little boys, loved baseball, hunting and fishing. He attended grade school, completing the eighth grade. He then went to work with his dad on their farm. Lester often spoke highly of his father and wanted little more than to be just like him and work alongside him. Lester grew up during the difficult times of the Great Depression, but was grateful for his parent?s lessons on hard work and the worth of money. Later in life, when he had his own children, Lester would pass those exact same lessons on to them.
Lester met the love of his life, Bonnie Jean Edwards, at his home when she tagged along with her mother who had come to visit. They dated, stayed close to home, and married March 21, 1943. Together they lived through World War II, the Korean War, Kennedy?s assassination, the Vietnam War, the first man on the moon, the development of the personal computer and Internet and two children. During the early years of their marriage, Lester was a logger on the Coos River. Lester also drove a school bus for many years. Wherever they lived, they always grew a beautiful garden.
Bonnie and Lester lived in Langlois for 30 years before moving back to Myrtle Point. Lester was always very involved in church wherever the family lived and was an active member of the Langlois Community Church and the Myrtle Point Baptist Church. He had great faith in God and trusted him always. Lester was a devoted husband and father, generous grandfather and wonderful great- grandfather. He loved his family and God. Lester?s only wish the past three years was to join his beloved wife, Bonnie, who passed away in February 2008.
Lester said on more than one occasion that his one desire in life was that ?his children and grandchildren would know that he loves them and would give them any dang thing they wanted if he could.? They all knew that too, because that is just who he was. To know Lester was to love and respect him. He will be remembered as a great man, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandpa and his far-reaching love and influence will be felt for many years to come.
Lester is survived by his daughter, Connie McMurain of Myrtle Point; granddaughters, Kerrie and husband, Justin Ferren and great-grandson, Thomas of Coquille and Caitlin and husband, Ryan Petry of Myrtle Point; son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Yvonne Higgins of Klamath Falls; grandson, Michael and wife, Melanie Higgins and their sons, Devin and Zack of Orem, Utah; granddaughter, Joleane and husband, James Sharp and their children, Logan and Taylor of Forest Grove; granddaughter, Elizabeth and husband, Steve Cormack and their children, Jacob, MaKenna and Kyler of Fort Collins, Colo.; and grandson, Daniel and wife, Laurie Higgins and their children, Calvin, Emmeline, Leona and Jonathan of Eugene.
He was preceded in death by all of his siblings and parents.
Arrangements are under the direction of Myrtle Grove Funeral Service, 541-396- 3158.

some songs up, such as "Roly-poly Daddy's Little
Fatty." Ralph's health got bad, so in 1956, they
moved to Central Oregon and ranched for a few

| Brutally Murdered Near Powers
Word comes from Powers of the brutal murder of William Whobrey on the county road last night about two miles this side of that city. As the story goes he was returning to Broadbent in an automobile with his nephew, Clifford Elford, when engine trouble developed while they were engaged in adjusting the machinery, they were pounced upon by two or three unknown men and beaten. The instrument of death used on Whobrey was an auto lifting jack. There were two of these crude insturments that were found to have blood stains. While Whobrey's head was mashed to a pulp his nephew was only dazed from the blows and when he regained consciousness he went to a near by farm house and summoned aid.
The authorities are not inclined to take Clifford's statement and he is being detained for further questioning. Clifford is 20 years of age.So far no motive has been disclosed for him to commit the rash act.The murder occurred at a lonely point on the road and it was close on to midnight.
Whobrey had long resided in the Myrtle Point section and bore an excellent reputation and was a good citizen. He was a brother of John Whobrey, the well-known hide man, and close onto 60 years of age.
The Sun (Marshfield, Ore.), June 3, 1926
The funeral For William Whobrey, who was murdered near Powers last Thursday night, was conducted Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at Catching Creek and burial was in the old family cemetery there. The deceased was placed beside the body of his wife and son. His father was also buried in this cemetery.
Members of the I.O.O.F. lodge acted as pallbearers. An evangelist, whose name was not known here today, conducted the ceremony. About 25 Klansmen were reported present robed and masked, and participated in the service.
The attendance of the Klansmen at the funeral has aroused interest as to whether William Whobrey or Clifford Elford, or both, belonged to the Klan. No announcement has been made.
Father in Mashfield
Nothing new developed yesterday in the case of Clifford Elford, charged with the murder of his uncle, Wm. Whobrey. "Kansas" Elford, the suspect's father, transacted business in Marshfield today and saw his attorneys, Gross, Murphy & Skipworth. He reported that his son was not worried. Mr. Elford says that there is no shadow of a doubt in his mind of his son's innocence, but believes him to be the unfortunate victim of a "frame up" of some kind.

George Edward Wittick
A graveside service for George Edward "Buster"
Wittick, 81, of Warrenton, will be held at 1 p.m.
on Friday, Dec. 29, at Catching Creek Cemetery in
Myrtle Point. A reception will follow at 95536 S.
Coos River Lane in Coos Bay.
Buster was born March 14, 1925, in Coos Bay, to
George and Mary Wittick. He died Nov. 20, 2006, in
Vancouver, Wash.
Buster came from a pioneer logging family, was
raised in Coos Bay and graduated from Marshfield
High School. He attended Oregon State College
and went on to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps
during World War II. After bombardier school, he
deployed as a lieutenant to Venosa, Italy, where
he flew as a radar observer on a B-24 for eight
combat invasions. Following his service, he
returned to Coos Bay, where he worked many years
with his father, George, as co-owner, manager and
salesman of Coos Bay Logging Supply. He traveled
daily to logging camps, selling chokers, wire rope
and explosives. Together, they expanded into Case
tractors and hardware, ultimately opening two more
logging supply stores in Reedsport and Newport.
Eventually, Buster sold his stores and worked for
close friend, George Walker, in Portland,
surveying logging sites on Mount St. Helens.
During this period, he lost his wife, the light of
his life, Beverly June. He moved to a houseboat on
the Willamette River and retired from the logging
business. Never one to be idle, Buster continued
to work in a local junk yard and sold cars for fun
at a nearby dealership. While living at the river,
he met and married Jody Bekins. They energetically
remodeled the houseboat and enjoyed water
activities on the Willamette. In 1996, Buster
suffered a stroke. Despite this unexpected
setback, Buster continued to enjoy life. Jody
devoted her life to caring for him and worked hard
to surround him with family, friends and great
food. His last years were spent living near the
beach in Warrenton.
Buster is gone but never forgotten. He was a man
larger then life and rich with family and friends.
He had boundless energy, drive and a fascination
with so many things; from his love of reading the
classifieds to becoming an auctioneer. He loved
his family and his Lord, and grew to appreciate
all that much more through the years. His family
will miss him, and they are blessed with a
treasure chest of memories.
Buster will always be remembered for his love of
the land, hunting, RV trips and socializing with
family and friends. He was blessed with numerous
friends; too many to mention all. Especially close
to him were Dell and Jeanette Brunell, Loal and
Dottie Smith, George and Lola Walker, Hugh and
Margaret Hamilton, Keith and Elaine Elliott,
Kenneth and Dorothy Emery, Clarence and Marge
Jensen, Dean McGuire, Ralph Sweet, Bill Campbell
and Richard "Chappy" McCarthy. He also enjoyed
the friendship of many of their children, Anna,
Helen, Nancy and Connie Brunell; Cindy and Billy
Elliott; Hugh, Karen and Roxanne Hamilton; and
Tina and Bruce Emery. Most recently, Jody's
granddaughter, Tiffany, held a special place in
his heart.
Buster is survived by his wife of 10 years, Jody;
his devoted daughters, Cathy Brodie and husband,
Jerry, Mary Lee Sergi and husband, Vince, and
Barbie Cusick and husband, John; his proud sons,
Thomas Wittick and Larry Moss; eight
grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffery B., Trent, Tasha,
Jace, Jeffery C., Aaron, Tiffany; and two
great-grandchildren, Megan and Mariah; and
cousins, Judy Ann Mogan and husband, Mike, and
Don Laskey.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the
NSCU Hospice Fund, VA Medical Center,
V3NSCU, P.O. Box 1035, Portland, OR 97207.
Arrangements are under the direction of Myrtle
Grove Funeral Service, 396- 3158.
